Anime Hajime Review: Fight Ippatsu! Juden-chan!!

***Warning, the following may contain spoilers for Fight Ippatsu! Juden-chan! Reader discretion is advised.***

Series Synopsis

A Charger Girl maintains and removes depression within the human world. When someone's self-confidence falls, they're rejuvenated with a shot of electricity. Thus, replenishing their energy and positivity.

Plug Cryostat (voiced by Kaori Fukuhara) is one of these Charger Girls.

Though she loves her job, Plug isn’t that good at it. Yet she remains dedicated and wishes to help the people in her care. Her goal isn't to relieve depression. Instead, she hopes to remove it at the source.

Like all Charger Girls, Plug has the ability to use phasing. This makes her invisible to human eyes. However, she meets Sento Oumi (voiced by Hiroki Takahashi). To her shock, he is the first human who can interact with her.

Due to her dismal work ethic, Plug's placed under the supervision of Alesta Blanket (voiced by Ayahi Takagaki). The polar opposite to Plug, Alesta can't stand how her junior performs her job. In contrast, Plug finds it annoying how Alesta keeps getting in the way of her work.

Despite differing personalities, Plug, Alesta, and Sento work to keep depression levels down.

Series Positives

The series was awful the whole way through. But it never got good. Fight Ippatsu, at best, tolerable.

Odd Couple Pairing

There were strong characters. In fact, there were too many that didn't serve a purpose. No single person could hold any amount of screen time. Plug was annoying more often than not. Alesta was completely uninspired. Sento was a bit of a tool.

As individuals, there was nothing to them. When they’re put together, though, they made up some ground. Particularly Plug and Alesta.

If you compare these two to Ichiko Sakura and Momiji from Binbougami ga, they were abysmal. That said, Fight Ippatsu did tap into the same type of energy Binbougami went above and beyond with.

Both shows used the odd couple motif. Two opposite personalities coming together to form a single entity. The rivalry between Plug and Alesta was good for the occasional chuckle, but not much else. Still, it did make the series bearable and if I dare say a little fun.

Unfortunately, both this type of story troupe only works when the parties can hold their own. Why? Simple, the characters may not always be together. During these moments, what are you left with? This is one of the many areas where Fight Ippatsu fell flat.

When it worked, the Plug-Alesta pairing was amusing. When it didn't it was forgettable.

Series Negatives

The humor was bland. The slapstick was weak. Nothing came together. Everything was way too over the top. It was all silly and dumb rather than funny.

The worst thing was, for most of the show Fight Ippatsu was boring. Things did pick up a tad. Too bad was to be too little too late for some people.

Forced

This show wanted to be something big and tried way too hard to accomplish that.

Threats were nonexistent. Issues were thin. Problems got shoehorned in. The biggest slap in the face, so obvious too. Everything and I mean everything, was forced. The comedy, the characters, the situations, the story.

Fight Ippatsu was straightforward enough. The old way of doing things gets challenged by a new set of ideas. Simple, right? I mean, how do you screw that up? That’s easy. You make the old way of doing things clearly wrong.

Think back to the job of a Charger Girl. They go around and make people feel better. Yet, Alesta and the rest believed that wasn't their responsibility. Wait, what? Alesta was the counter argument to a moral conflict that didn't exist. Thus, souring one of the main reasons she was even in the show

The other reason she was here, along with Plug and every other female character, was because of boobs.

I'm amazed at the lengths Fight Ippatsu went to in order to shove as many ecchi scenes into this series as it did. The sheer amount of fan service would've been hilarious. If not for it being so ridiculous.

This show had no sense of self-control. The worst example of this was when Plug got injured during a charge up. To the show’s credit, it was actually a pretty well-constructed scene. It was effective in illustrating Plug’s dedication to her job. Therefore, it was a shame when that tiny hint of me caring got thrown out the window.

Plug was in critical condition. For the first and only time, you felt concerned for her well-being. For once she was a credible character. Except, the show needs to meet its ecchi quota. So as laid, in pain, on the operating table, the camera made sure we had a clear shot of her exposed breast the entire time. There was no reason for that.

It's okay to back off and let a moment happen.

Final Thoughts

The show was forced. The story was broken. The characters were bland.

Fight Ippatsu was a complete disappointment.

Even as an ecchi anime, there's not a whole lot here that'll make you want to watch this show.

While you might find more enjoyment here than in perhaps Majikoi or Amatsuki, that’s not saying much.
